I'm Thomas McConochie. My Chinese name is 馬常思. I'm an Australian translator of Chinese into English based in Sydney. I studied Mandarin at the Australian National University and at Chinese Culture University and National Taiwan University. I lived in Taiwan for 3 years, from 2009-2012, studying Chinese during the day and teaching English during the evening. My time in Taiwan was super fun!
我是Thomas McConochie, 中文名字是馬常思，我是澳大利亞人。我是住在澳洲悉尼的中英翻譯者。我在澳大利亞國立大學，臺灣的中國文化大學和國立臺灣大學學了漢語。我在臺灣住了三年，從2009年到2012年初。 那時，我白天學中文，晚上教英語。我在臺灣的歲月真好玩兒！
How I got into translation. 我進入翻譯界的背景。
I started working as a translator in 2012, after finishing my Master of Asian Studies degree at the Australian National University. I continued doing freelance translation work throught my PhD at the University of New South Wales between 2013-2017. From 2017, I started working with translation companies on outsourced Chinese to English translations.
2012年，在澳大利亞國立大學亞洲研究碩士讀完之後，我開始從事翻譯工作。在2013-2017年的期間内，我在新南威爾士大學讀博士，同時也接活辦翻譯工作。從2017年起，我跟翻譯服務公司開始合作辦外包的中英翻譯工作。
My Thoughts on Translation. 我對翻譯的概念。
Translation is a service I provide to clients. There are many different approaches
and thoughts about good quality translation. However, there are markers of quality most translators agree on, such as accuracy, fluency, whether the translation sounds like something a native-spekaer would say, whether the translation meets the client's needs, etc. I work with clients to produce the best quality translation for their needs.
翻譯是我給客人提供的服務。對好品質的翻譯來説，存在著很多不一樣的方法和概念，大多數翻譯者都同意好品質的譯文有一些可認同的部分，比方説，準確度，流利度，像不像母語者的説法，譯文是不是滿足客人的需求，等等。我跟客人合作來準備最適合客人需求的翻譯。
